Primary 7 Hawthorn Days Trip

Primary 7 Hawthorn Days Trip

P7 were out and about again recently visiting the Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh.
Having recently studied the Irish Famine in the World Around Us, the pupils participated in “Hawthorn Days and Wildflower Ways” activities, which focused on the famine novel “Under the Hawthorn Tree” by Marita Conlon McKenna.  A superb day was had by all, as pupils got to see the types of houses the paupers of Ireland lived in at the time. They also were able to taste the soup offered as relief by the government and, surprisingly, it was lovely. Two lucky P7s were allowed to taste buttermilk - you can tell from the photograph just what Eoin thought of it! Afterwards the children were able to travel aboard the famine ship, before arriving in the land of America. The guides from the Folk Park were excellent and really helped to bring the novel to life. Pop in to P7 if you want to hear more about it or see the videos from the day!
